Relativistic Electron Precipitation by EMIC Waves: Importance of Nonlinear Resonant Effects

چکیده
Relativistic electron losses in Earth's radiation belts are usually attributed to resonant scattering by electromagnetic waves. One of the most important wave mode for such is ion cyclotron (EMIC) mode. Within quasi-linear diffusion framework, resonance relativistic electrons with EMIC waves results very fast precipitation atmosphere. However, intensities often exceed threshold nonlinear interaction, and intense have been shown transport away from loss cone due force bunching effect. In this study we investigate if can block precipitation. We combine test particle simulations, low-altitude ELFIN observations EMIC-driven precipitation, ground-based observations. Comparing simulations observations, show that, despite low pitch-angle being transported cone, at higher pitch angles filling

Simulation of the energy distribution of relativistic electron precipitation caused by quasi-linear interactions with EMIC waves
[1]Previous studies on electromagnetic ion cyclotron (EMIC) waves as a possible cause of relativistic electron precipitation (REP) mainly focus on the time evolution of the trapped electron flux. However, directly measured by balloons and many satellites is the precipitating flux as well as its dependence on both time and energy. Therefore, to better understand whether pitch angle scattering by...
متن کاملStatistical analysis of relativistic electron energies for cyclotron resonance with EMIC waves observed on CRRES
[1] Electromagnetic ion cyclotron (EMIC) waves which propagate at frequencies below the proton gyrofrequency can undergo cyclotron resonant interactions with relativistic electrons in the outer radiation belt and cause pitch-angle scattering and electron loss to the atmosphere. Typical storm-time wave amplitudes of 1–10 nT cause strong diffusion scattering which may lead to significant relativi...
متن کاملNew relativistic effects in the dynamics of nonlinear hydrodynamical waves.
In Newtonian and relativistic hydrodynamics the Riemann problem determines the evolution of a fluid which is initially characterized by two states having different rest-mass density, pressure, and velocity. When the fluid is allowed to relax, one of three possible wave patterns is produced, corresponding to the propagation in opposite directions of two nonlinear hydrodynamical waves. New effect...
متن کاملElectron heating by nonlinear whistler waves
Nonlinear whistler-mode phenomena observed in laboratory plasmas will be addressed. Nonlinearities arise when strong waves modify the density, temperature and magnetic field, all of which affect the wave propagation. A brief review of thermal filamentation will be given. The main focus is on the magnetic nonlinearity of whistler modes whose wave magnetic fields exceed the ambient magnetic field...
متن کاملElectron pitch-angle diffusion: resonant scattering by waves vs. nonadiabatic effects
In this paper we investigate the electron pitchangle diffusion coefficients in the night-side inner magnetosphere around the geostationary orbit (L∼ 7) due to magnetic field deformation. We compare the effects of resonant wave–particle scattering by lower band chorus waves and the adiabaticity violation of electron motion due to the strong curvature of field lines in the vicinity of the equator...
